St. John’s
Pivot first launched in St. John’s during March 2020. Our key delivery partner is Quadrangle NL; a registered charity and 2SLGBTQIA+ community centre for individuals and organizations of NL, a space that is a resource for building community.
In its first edition, Pivot in Newfoundland and Labrador started in person before going online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, the program continued with guest presenters from PFLAG, Spectrum Queer Choir, Memorial University, Gender Journeys, and more join us to provide local knowledge and expertise on a range of important community health issues.
For the community health intervention component of the program, Pivot participants decided to develop (Un)Covered: Sex at the Kitchen Table, a webinar series which addresses the lack of sexual health education for queer and trans people in NL and digs deeper into the barriers that contribute to this gap. You can see all the recorded videos on CBRC’s YouTube.
The second edition of Pivot was entirely online which allowed for participants from across the province. The community intervention was Refocusing the Spectrum:Indigenous Reflections on Sexuality, Gender, & Health outside of Colonialism.
This two-part project included a collection of art from Indigenous members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community released on the Quadrangle website around the subject, followed by a live webinar and panel about the intersectionality of sexuality, gender, health, and Indigeneity.
Pivot NL is next starting in September 2021.
