Pivot launched in St. John’s during March 2020, led by CBRC and two local partner organizations:
The AIDS Committee of Newfoundland and Labrador, a provincial organization committed to preventing the spread of HIV and Hepatitis C. We work to support people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS.
A community centre for 2SLGBTQAI+ individuals and organizations, a space that is a resource for building community resilience and connections.
There were a fair number of challenges for participants to overcome: The second day of the first weekend of the program was cancelled because of a snowstorm. The second weekend saw the rise of COVID-19, resulting in meetings getting pushed online. Still, the team prevailed! We were very fortunate to have guest presenters from PFLAG, Spectrum Queer Choir, Memorial University, Gender Journeys, and more join us to provide local knowledge and expertise on a range of important community health issues.
For the community health intervention component of the program, Pivot participants decided to develop (Un)Covered: Sex at the Kitchen Table, a podcast which addresses the lack of sexual health education for queer and trans people in NL and digs deeper into the barriers that contribute to this gap. This podcast is currently in development and should launch in fall 2020.
